<br />
I remember when I first created my Instagram a couple years ago (I think my first picture was an early love, the Oreo McFlurry) and my original intention was for it to remain at private settings and to catalog my daily mundane activities for memory purposes.<br />
<br />
And then I fell to peer pressure as my friends wanted to follow those mundane activities. I'm still not entirely sure why. I got cats, and they are too cute all the time to not take pictures. I love brunch, and I take pictures of that.<br />
<br />
It's just SO easy to fit this bite-size posting into my day when I only have bite-size free time.<br />
<br />
However, I like blogging! I like writing my thoughts and interacting with people through blogging. Heavens knows I have enough back-logged projects to share that I'm not lacking for content.<br />
<br />
All this to say, I am not abandoning this space. I just have to be prepared to blog with intention, and it might require actually scheduling it! And this is also an invitation that if you want to know what I'm sewing on a more regular basis, come join me on Instagram - I'm @sewfestive and would love to have you.<br />

<br />
Some things I plan to keep mainly to IG...<br />
<br />
I, Rebecca of Sew Festive Handmade, sign up as a participant of Me-Made-May '15. I will try to wear at least 5 me-made items per week for the duration of May. I will document my outfits on Instagram and will do a round-up on the blog at the end of the month. I hope to pinpoint how my me-made garments make me feel when I wear them in order to become a better sewist.<br />
<br />
The above dress is a Darling Ranges by Megan Nielsen, made for Easter this year in an April Rhodes Arizona voile. It's the latest of those unblogged projects!<br />

<br />
Well, as a married lady of a little over 2 months, it's all settled down and I have life back in order, and more importantly, have all my professional photos back ;)<br />
<br />
If you live in the Central Florida area, I'd highly recommend <a href="http://www.sarahben.com/" target="_blank">Sarah and Ben</a>, who took all the photos in this post and who are just all around fabulous people. The photography was my most important part of all the vendors of the wedding day, so I was a fierce critic when researching photogs!<br />
<br />
But as promised, I wanted to show off the DIY parts of the wedding day. Partially because I was tickled with how it all turned out and in case anyone is looking for some inspiration for their own wedding/event, or those of you who just love wedding photos [I do!].<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7556/16117407536_c019ee7e66_b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7556/16117407536_c019ee7e66_b.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7495/15957423177_da69a74404_b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="424" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7495/15957423177_da69a74404_b.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
My dress came with an attached beaded belt that I hated, and had removed during production, because I had a specific vision for a belt. I found some beading from China on Etsy and bought some beautiful silk bridal ribbon from my local fabric store. While not super noticeable from afar, it was just the little touch I wanted. I sewed the ribbon to the beading with some invisible thread and we were in business! Total cost of about $15, as compared to the ridiculous prices of wedding belts.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7558/16117393196_140cdfb447_b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="424" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7558/16117393196_140cdfb447_b.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8614/15520844064_934dfa6ace_b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8614/15520844064_934dfa6ace_b.jpg" width="424" /></a></div>
<br />
I also sewed my own garter and it was so simple! I love polka dots and wanted to incorporate them as much as possible without being obnoxious, so I got some polka dot grosgrain ribbon and some polka dot lace netting, along with some 3/4" elastic. I sewed the garter at a couple inches smaller than the circumference of my leg. Total cost of about $5.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8592/15955735748_35c7bef541_b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="424" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8592/15955735748_35c7bef541_b.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I created the earrings I wore by scouting around for some better quality costume jewelry and creating my own with some assistance from Stephen using pliers and a soldering iron.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7469/16141268471_64101695bd_b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7469/16141268471_64101695bd_b.jpg" width="424" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7580/15955953660_59b653f11a_b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="424" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7580/15955953660_59b653f11a_b.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7469/16143176005_a6219725fd_b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="424" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7469/16143176005_a6219725fd_b.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I painted all the signage at the wedding over the weeks leading up to the big day. Our colors were mainly gray and navy with pops of mint and yellow. I bought picture frames when I had coupons to Michaels or Joann and then created inserts for the welcome sign, alcohol lists, etc. The table numbers were tiny square canvases. I already owned the white plate from IKEA, and I just repainted it. Total cost was less than $50, and we've already reused the frames. If you look closely at the picture with the canvas table number, you can see tea lights on the table as well, which were wrapped in silver washi tape to coordinate with the mercury glass votives.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7559/15957412527_15c721549d_b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="424" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7559/15957412527_15c721549d_b.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7467/15957094559_a41aef8869_b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7467/15957094559_a41aef8869_b.jpg" width="424" /></a></div>
<br />
The table runners were all cut and hemmed by me. The navy for the 10 guest tables was just cheap cotton that I got for about $2/yard. The cake table runners were a navy geometric print sateen that I picked up for $5/yard from my local fabric shop earlier this year. I saved that fabric and washed it after the wedding so it can be used for pillow shams. The head table was a king's table, so it was long, and required a special table runner [obviously] so I picked up a pewter sequin fabric for $8 that I had to sew together to make long enough. I'm still picking sequins off my carpet, 2 months later.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7488/15957415517_452047200d_b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="424" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7488/15957415517_452047200d_b.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8608/15956165300_6bd8316c9a_b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8608/15956165300_6bd8316c9a_b.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7582/15957091839_4cfa2ea5c4_b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7582/15957091839_4cfa2ea5c4_b.jpg" width="424" /></a></div>
<br />
Stephen and I wanted our wedding to be classic but we wanted to introduce a small bit of whimsy as well. Enter, dinosaurs! I love dinosaur jokes, tshirts, pretty much whatever has a T-Rex on it. So we bought bulk packs of tiny dino figurines on Amazon and spray painted them mint and silver and used them for the place settings and for the cake table. I also made the cake topper [RAWR means I love you in dinosaur, dontcha know] using die-cut letters and toothpicks. Superglue was definitely our friend the last couple days.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7544/16117499216_66ca910fb8_b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="424" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7544/16117499216_66ca910fb8_b.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Our seating chart doubled as our favors. We found these AHHHMAZING <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/TheCaramelJar" target="_blank">salted caramels on Etsy</a> [do yourself a favor, please] and ordered several pounds. Fun fact: I don't like chocolate. So the salted caramels were a win for everyone. We then paired that with a Kona coffee blend that we got from friends of ours who have a <a href="http://www.seabreezecoffee.com/" target="_blank">coffee and tea distribution company</a>, because we love both Hawaii and coffee. We packed them together ourselves a couple days before the wedding, assembly line style with my family.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7528/15957419197_d6dee178f2_b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="424" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7528/15957419197_d6dee178f2_b.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8614/16141271791_16067f3eec_b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="424" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8614/16141271791_16067f3eec_b.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7579/15955728438_e7245c9d40_b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="424" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7579/15955728438_e7245c9d40_b.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7572/15955721598_ed87d05e48_b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7572/15955721598_ed87d05e48_b.jpg" width="424" /></a></div>
<br />
And finally, the wedding guest book quilt. I sewed together most of the paper pieced envelopes, enlarged to be an appropriate size for writing a note. I ran out of background fabric/time [seriously, where does all the time go leading up to a wedding?!] so I put up a guideline envelope to show everyone where to sign. I painted our monogram for the table and bought a bunch of Micron pens. The quilt will obviously get its own post once I hunt down the few remaining people who didn't sign squares. I love the photos of the table set up because it makes me very pleased about my color choices. I also plan to turn the Cotton & Steel framed sign into a pillow, because cats :)<br />
<br />
So in the grand scheme of things, maybe not the most DIY wedding in the world, but I thought it was a nice mix of handmade and small business, that it represented me and my vision, and that it didn't drive me crazy during the final days.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8586/16141262711_fb3eca99e5_b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8586/16141262711_fb3eca99e5_b.jpg" width="424" /></a></div>

Thanks for reading this novel of a post. If you've made it this far, go order yourself some <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/TheCaramelJar" target="_blank">caramels</a>.<br />

It's been awhile, huh? Since I last posted I have: gotten a promotion, gone to a Garth Brooks concert, and last but not least, gotten married. So obviously I've been really busy, and sadly my sewing has suffered. I do plan to do a round-up post of all the sewing and DIY that I did for the wedding!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://amyscreativeside.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/Fall-2014-BQF-Button-small.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://amyscreativeside.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/Fall-2014-BQF-Button-small.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
Luckily, I have some backlogged projects to show for the <a href="http://amyscreativeside.com/2014/10/24/bloggers-quilt-festival-fall-2014-edition/" target="_blank">Bloggers Quilt Festival!</a><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5600/15489309370_5164937904_k.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5600/15489309370_5164937904_k.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
I made this quilt earlier this year for my boss. She was set to give birth in late February and we were going to have a nice baby shower where I could gift it. And then in January she ended up leaving suddenly and being placed on bed rest and my best laid quilt plans were in shambles. So this didn't get finished until June...shame on me!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3944/15672316051_c5e750dd89_k.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3944/15672316051_c5e750dd89_k.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Her baby's nursery was decorated in pink and gray, so I collected fabrics in that color scheme for a while. I don't do pink, so I went hot pink where I could. I used the Firework block from Simplify and reworked it to a size that I no longer remember. And then I just added borders as I felt like it.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3877/14477754331_5dc8d05e74_k.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3877/14477754331_5dc8d05e74_k.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
Originally the triangle border was random between the pinks and low volume, but I hated it, so I ripped it out and alternated between the pinks and gray/white. I also tried a checkerboard border and hated that too. So I went simple and tried to let the fabrics shine. I really enjoyed manipulating that gray Riley Blake bias stripe fabric throughout the quilt.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2929/14479851582_cac34415ba_k.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2929/14479851582_cac34415ba_k.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2931/14294490060_93ba072d5f_k.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2931/14294490060_93ba072d5f_k.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3848/14501238623_23ed04a779_b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3848/14501238623_23ed04a779_b.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7526/15489282417_44d313be8f_b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7526/15489282417_44d313be8f_b.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
And then the quilting. Oh, the quilting. I really wanted to stretch myself in my FMQing on this little baby quilt. The back is hot pink flannel, so I knew the stitches would really sink in, and it's small enough to really wrangle through my machine. There's some stippling, orange peels, figure 8's, straight lines, scribbly lines, and clamshells.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3837/14479889954_5e18c0fe9a_k.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3837/14479889954_5e18c0fe9a_k.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
I bound it in one of my favorite prints from Jeanean Morrison's Silent Cinema line, wrapped it all up, and gifted it to my boss, who loved it.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2898/14479829372_4f6c24ba31_b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2898/14479829372_4f6c24ba31_b.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I figured I would enter this in the <a href="http://amyscreativeside.com/2014/10/24/bloggers-quilt-festival-home-machine-quilted-quilts-3/" target="_blank">Home Machine Quilted category,</a> because even though I know there are some amazing entries of people who are far more skilled than me, I'm proud to have pushed myself on this!<br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I took a 5 minute mental break at work and scrolled through Facebook on my phone. Only to see that Fons and Porter's Love of Quilting Facebook page has a poll open for the cover quilt of their September/October issue...</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I actually went over to my supervisor and said "hey, pretend you care about sewing and quilting for 2.5 seconds so I can tell you some exciting news." She did an admirable job haha.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">So if you'd care to vote [you know, you can vote for whichever one you want to, but I'll give you an extra twinkly smile if you vote for mine ;) ] then visit the </span><a href="https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/XY9GTHV" target="_blank"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">survey here</span></a><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Also, it's hard to read the comments on the Facebook post and not take it personally - I guess I'd never make it in a quilt show.</span>Sew Festivehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10191197877691355031noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7401629941608199941.post-65257820475079281372014-07-16T12:11:00.000-05:002014-07-16T12:11:20.776-05:00A Finished Tshirt Quilt<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Hi all!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">We're in the middle of a very typical Florida afternoon thunderstorm right now, which always makes me think of a nap, which then makes me think of snuggly quilts!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Quite a few months ago at this point, an old friend from elementary school reached out to me. We follow each other on IG and she posts just the best pictures of the adventures of her and her little boy. She wanted me to make a tshirt quilt for him. Being the sentimental person that I am, I suggested she meet me at our old elementary school and she gave me a bag full of tshirts and onesies.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2898/14294539000_84e7821fbf_b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2898/14294539000_84e7821fbf_b.jpg" width="300" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I also discovered some newborn blankets in there.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">So I cut up these tshirts and onesies and blankets and interfaced them with lightweight interfacing. Some of the onesies were not quite up to the 9x9" square size that I was using, so I pieced some of them together [which I was kicking myself for by the end]. The layout ended up being 6 by 7, which was quite a bit bigger than orinally planned, because when I started laying out the squares I realized I could make it look a bit more cohesive by light value shirts with dark. I ended up using the blanket pieces in more than one place.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2938/14294711497_5a89e97a37_b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2938/14294711497_5a89e97a37_b.jpg" width="480" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I actually had fun making the top, because I used the tag #maddoxstshirtquilt on IG and so the mom could be an active participant in the decision making, and see the progress and get excited. Yay social media!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2907/14479871122_0a0c55278b_b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2907/14479871122_0a0c55278b_b.jpg" width="480" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The reason this thing deserves a post is because of the quilting. No, don't squint your eyes at the screen, there's not some spectacular quilting there. It's just FMQ stippling. But OH. MY. GOSH. I think I almost gave up quilting with this thing. I used stretch needles [even though the back was Kona cotton], because I thought it would make the front look better. And I used my typical white Gutermann thread on top and invisible thread in the bobbin. I've used invisible thread before and been fine. I've used a stretch needle before and been fine. But clearly this quilt was my test.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5499/14458058546_3a6eb17f1b_b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5499/14458058546_3a6eb17f1b_b.jpg" width="640" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I BROKE 23 NEEDLES FOLKS. TWENTY THREE. Phew, it feels better to get that out. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2895/14479877802_a0562dd6be.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2895/14479877802_a0562dd6be.jpg" width="480" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">At one point I almost cried in sheer frustration. So I stocked up on needles, and I turned to Amazon to buy YLI invisible thread. Through an overwhelming sense of stubborn-ness, I prevailed, and finally finished. And it doesn't look like I broke a zillion needles. It doesn't look like I had a mid-quilting crisis. It looks...like stippling. After the first square I did switch to invisible thread in the top and bobbin, which also made it difficult to see where I had already stippled.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">But I think the finished result looks awesome, I've gotten to see her precious little boy snuggling the quilt on IG, and I've actually gotten quite a few requests from her other IG mom friends who are also interested. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2899/14458055586_7d76839826_b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2899/14458055586_7d76839826_b.jpg" width="480" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I think before I tackle another one, I will definitely figure out how to only use 1 needle for the quilt ;)</span>Sew Festivehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10191197877691355031noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7401629941608199941.post-10680183292541833182014-06-01T15:30:00.001-05:002014-06-01T19:09:28.571-05:00Two scrap packs to destash!<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Hi all! Just popping in right quick on this Sunday afternoon - I've got a couple hours of trial prep ahead of me today...I'm the only witness in a trial tomorrow, so I've got to make sure I'm a well-oiled machine!</span><br>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I spent a couple hours yesterday organizing fabric and then started listing bundles on Instagram [I'm <strong>sewfestive</strong> over there!]. I've got 2 left, so I wanted to let you know over here on the blog.</span><br>
<span style="font-family: Arial;"></span><br>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2932/14343379993_cafb131164_b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2932/14343379993_cafb131164_b.jpg" width="640"></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I've got a solids pack that is mostly Kona solids, with some Cotton Couture, and a couple pieces of Essex linen blend. $8, including shipping [within US]. Also, hey, it appears I never use orange...</span><br>
<span style="font-family: Arial;"></span><br>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2935/14136526098_dfbbcc269a_b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2935/14136526098_dfbbcc269a_b.jpg" width="640"></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">And a pack of 93 strips, varying in width from probably about an inch to 4 inches and anywhere from about 5 inches to WOF in length. $12, including shipping.</span><br>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">These fabrics are all unwashed and come from a smoke-free home. If you're interested, please say which one you'd want and I will respond to your comment to get your Paypal email to send an invoice.</span><br>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I've got larger cuts of fabric that will be posted on IG throughout the week that I just don't think I'm going to use and need a new forever home ;) - so make sure to add <strong>sewfestive</strong> if you want to snatch up some fabric at low prices!</span><br>
<span style="font-family: Arial;"></span><br>
<span style="font-family: Arial;">Have a great week!</span>Sew Festivehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10191197877691355031noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7401629941608199941.post-38637811701830677722014-05-18T22:57:00.007-05:002014-05-18T23:04:21.391-05:00Blogger's Quilt Festival - Spring 2014<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://amyscreativeside.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/spring-2014-BQF-Button-300x290.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://amyscreativeside.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/spring-2014-BQF-Button-300x290.jpg" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I have really loved the <a href="http://amyscreativeside.com/2014/05/16/bloggers-quilt-festival-spring-2014/" target="_blank">Blogger's Quilt Festival</a> in recent years, because as Instagram has become more popular, I like to follow the #quiltmarket posts and drool over all the upcoming fabrics...the Quilt Festival helps me get through not being at Market in person to pet the pretties. Plus I really like getting the opportunity to find more blogs to follow :)</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Here's my entry to the Festival...Emerald Ikat - entered into the <a href="http://amyscreativeside.com/2014/05/16/bloggers-quilt-festival-original-design-quilts/" target="_blank">Original Design Quilts</a> category.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5311/14032092467_d5465c284a_b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5311/14032092467_d5465c284a_b.jpg" width="640" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I drew this up a few years ago and then sat on it for a while. I just submitted it to Fons and Porter's Love of Quilting last fall on a whim, and when they accepted it I realized I had to figure it all out. I pieced mine using templates, but I also created a paper piecing version for the magazine.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5480/14218443304_93fe911743_b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5480/14218443304_93fe911743_b.jpg" width="480" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I personally don't really like to paper piece, but I can't deny the accuracy. I got some pretty perfect points without it though!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2912/14195492986_51b705ecd8_b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2912/14195492986_51b705ecd8_b.jpg" width="480" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The thing that I like the least about making projects for magazines is the tight turnaround between the acceptance of your submission and when the project is due. I have a day job that I work about 55 hours a week on average for, and I don't usually make my projects ahead of time because I don't have the funds/time to just make all the quilts that come into my head. Nor do I have oodles of people to give quilts to. So I want to know that a project needs to be made before I get started. That usually means I end up with a marathon of late-night quilting.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2915/14218660595_49d74412fa_b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2915/14218660595_49d74412fa_b.jpg" width="480" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">My cats usually think they're being helpful during these late night sessions. For this particular quilt I even sent an apology to the editor saying it would probably need to be lint-rolled when it arrived on their end, because there's just not an inch of cat-free space in my tiny apartment. Luckily, her response was that they love cats and totally understand that cats love fabric too! :)</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2903/14195499146_600aab6e24_b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2903/14195499146_600aab6e24_b.jpg" width="480" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I took pictures just outside the post office before mailing when I realized I wouldn't see the quilt again for about 6 months. It's a really big post office and I got quite a few stares and several questions. I usually take it as an opportunity to educate people about quilting and show them that young people can quilt too!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2914/14218666915_2e369e6b31_b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2914/14218666915_2e369e6b31_b.jpg" width="480" /></span></a></div>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The backing is a fabulous curtain from IKEA - it's a polyester blend, but I took a chance and it worked out just fine. It was a pain in the butt to baste though, so fair warning. The binding is a black crosshatch from an unknown line [I have several in my stash from different collections, and I totally should have labeled them!].</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Enjoy the rest of the <a href="http://amyscreativeside.com/2014/05/16/bloggers-quilt-festival-spring-2014/" target="_blank">Blogger's Quilt Festival</a>, and thanks for visiting!</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Hi all! Welcome to my little corner of the Interwebz.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">For those of you visiting for the first time, I'm Rebecca. I've been quilting/sewing and blogging for almost 3 years now [meep!] and over the past year I've also worked in child welfare, which has caused my free sewing time to take a huge nosedive. Like many of us, I'm still perfecting the balance between life and my hobby, but if you want to see projects from some of my busier sewing days, just click on the Finished Projects tab at the top! I haven't updated it recently because I'm a bad blogger lol.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">This is my recent favorite project - it's a quilt that is in the May/June edition of Fons and Porter's Love of Quilting, and it will get it's own post one of these days :)</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>

<em></em><br />
<em>::tumbleweed blows by::</em><br />
<br />
Oh hi. I'm Rebecca. I used to blog in this space here. <em>Sigh</em>.<br />
<br />
I can't believe it's May already - is anyone else experiencing that?! I'm not even sure what I've done with 2014 so far. My life right now is kind of like a really stuffed burrito from Moe's...once you take a bite you can't put it down until it's done, otherwise it will all fall apart! I'm juggling so much stuff that I don't have time to stop and breathe, lest something fall by the wayside.<br />
<br />
But you know, I've been sewing a lot, and I have a backlog of like 6 projects that need to be blogged. And some of them are big. Luckily, I have the entire week off for the most relaxing sit-in-my-jammies-on-the-couch vacation. My first vacation time in a year. To say I'm excited is an understatement.<br />
<br />
I thought I'd kick off my project backlog with something that is not necessarily sewing related, but I'm tickled about my effort, so...I'm a bridesmaid in a friend's wedding next week and recently the maid of honor and I hosted a huge bridal shower tea party for her. We invited 50 people, so we had to get crafty on pretty much everything, since both of us are clearly not rolling in money.<br />
<br />
<em><span style="font-size: x-small;">[Please excuse that most of these are cell phone photos, I ran out of time to take proper photos before the event]</span></em><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7346/14121748142_47257917dd.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7346/14121748142_47257917dd.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Entry way - all the signs were chalkboard paper and all the centerpieces are tea pots or tea tins we owned or borrowed that were filled with flower arrangements the night before the event. All the brown kraft paper table runners were polka dot stamped by yours truly with a champagne metallic paint.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7399/14101584926_81205590a6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7399/14101584926_81205590a6.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2915/14144762603_96aecca927.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2915/14144762603_96aecca927.jpg" width="540" /></a></div>
<br />
The tables were set with individual tea place settings of real china with a tea pot cut out of paper and threaded with honey straws [the favors!] and the individual's name. The lips and mustaches were cut out of paper as well and used for a game - they ended up being used as photo props too! I think it looked super nice when all the tea lights were lit and provided that soft romantic glow to the space. We had 6 tables, so lots of candlelight!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2902/13938081397_acdea1d14f.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2902/13938081397_acdea1d14f.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
The color palette for the tea party was mint, ivory, and light peach, with gold accents. We ended up using pops of those green flowers in the centerpieces for a little bit of edge. We also spray painted the baby's breath gold.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5079/14124760785_a6421e172d.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5079/14124760785_a6421e172d.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
The guests got to enjoy a hot tea bar of several varieties of black, green, and herbal teas. I enjoyed a lovely green coconut variety. There was also cucumber water, lemonade, and blushberry iced tea.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7318/14144810193_787cd438d4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7318/14144810193_787cd438d4.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
This print came from Etsy and was dressed up with some gold glitter cardstock. I had really wanted an ornate frame and was having the hardest time finding one, so I used a cheap black frame that I had and covered in in gold striped washi tape.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7457/14101554836_de70e156c6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7457/14101554836_de70e156c6.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
This next sign is a platter from IKEA that I painted with chalkboard paint to sit on the gift table. I'm pretty excited to put it in my sewing room with some inspirational quote.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7417/13938131500_1b040295e0.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7417/13938131500_1b040295e0.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2906/14124765555_1851aaa2cb.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2906/14124765555_1851aaa2cb.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
The cohost and I made all the food the day before and day of. The bride is a vegetarian, which actually is perfectly suited for a tea party. Our menu consisted of mini spinach quiche and portabello mushroom and gouda hand-pies made by me for the hot food, cucumber and cream cheese finger sandwiches and caprese sandwiches that we made that morning, and then my cohost made blueberry, plain, and lemon ginger scones and lemon lavendar bars. We had a selection of nuts, dried fruit that we dipped in dark chocolate, and fruit-filled cakes made by the bride's grandmother.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2908/14121415711_d0bd352ba1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2908/14121415711_d0bd352ba1.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
My greatest achievement for the bridal tea party was this monstrous tulle wall! We held the event in a church [because of the number of people] and I really wanted to make our tea party space separate from the rest of the church to maintain the right atmosphere. So I got hundreds of yards of ivory and mint tulle online and cut strips to tie to fishing line. The wall ended up being 24 feet wide and 6 feet tall [it was strung between the food tables and the gift table]. I added the banner cut from more gold glitter cardstock and it ended up being a great room divider AND photo backdrop [that's my cohost on the left and the bride on the right]!<br />
<br />
All in all, a great day! I'm glad it's over with since it required a lot of planning and work, but it was pretty fun to pretend to be a party planner for a few weeks. Next up I have some quilts, clothing, and a tote bag, so stay tuned!<br />

But I've got my coffee in hand, so let's hop to it :)</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I like the idea of making basics, like tshirts, but because I don't have much experience sewing with knits, I was hesitant to buy a $15 pattern only to hate it.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Enter the <a href="http://blog-en.deer-and-doe.fr/42-new-pattern-the-plantain-t-shirt/" target="_blank">Deer and Doe Plantain tee</a>. Boom, free! No excuses now Rebecca!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2890/12602850043_9e395c6860_o.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2890/12602850043_9e395c6860_o.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I made it up first as a tshirt for Valentines Day, but it ended up being too short for my torso [I just wear it tucked into high-waisted things] when I wear typical pants, which sit low on my hips.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Since the tshirt was fun and easy, I decided to do a class knit shift dress. For my birthday a few weeks ago I bought really really nice thick stable knit [Using my limited knowledge, I'm guessing its ponte de roma] from my LQS in a beautiful navy and off white. The fact that it was my birthday was the only reason I succumbed to purchasing the $17/yd fabric.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I had taken the day after my birthday off from work and decided I would sew the dress as my present to myself whee! It took a few hours, because I'm a slow apparel sewer. And because, you know, I had to deal with this every step of the way:</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7417/13487759333_53bd942ccb_b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7417/13487759333_53bd942ccb_b.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">To make the dress I cut the size top that I needed and then once I got to the hemline of the shirt I simply graded out to the length dress that I wanted. I measured my hips and thighs and knew that the dress needed to be at least that wide. The overall shape is slightly A-line. I did have to tweak a little bit as I was sewing, because I just did all this directly on the fabric, not on pattern paper first.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2869/13487769643_05ae5055cb_b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2869/13487769643_05ae5055cb_b.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I actually pressed my seams this time around! Who knew that knits looked so much better when you press the seam. Laugh at me all you want :)</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7238/13488471914_267048f089_b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7238/13488471914_267048f089_b.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I also tried out the overlock stitch on my machine for the first time. It sews the seam and does a serger-like stitch all at once. I did have to trim down the seam, because unlike a serger there is no knife cutting away at the seam. But wow does it make it look so much more professional!! I'm going to do this on everything now. All the things!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3688/13487784853_12f3c50241_b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3688/13487784853_12f3c50241_b.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The only thing that this dress is missing is a twin-needle stitched neckline and hem. I have a twin needle. I definitely bought it. And then I put it somewhere to keep it safe and not lose it. And subsequently lost it. Apparently I'm one of <i>those </i>people. Who knew. Based on the pictures in this post, I also can't make normal faces for the camera.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7022/13488046464_a2c5c9d767_b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7022/13488046464_a2c5c9d767_b.jpg" width="380" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Anyways, sew the Plantain. Even if you're new with knits. You won't regret it. It looks fabulous. My next version is going to have cat elbow patches and I'M SO EXCITED ABOUT IT.</span><br />

I especially like that we each post Target pictures for the other person because #targetlovesquilters. So when I saw that she had won a Botanics layer cake, and I had purchased one in a moment of weakness, I said "we can't mess with destiny" and a challenge was born!</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7142/6653490361_5cf24d572f.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7142/6653490361_5cf24d572f.jpg" height="640" width="518" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">We agreed to create a project using said layer cake and it was to be based on a picture. And wouldn't ya know it, the picture Jess chose was all about improv, and mine was all about precision. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3822/12904263845_c6626cf3f6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><img border="0" src="http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3822/12904263845_c6626cf3f6.jpg" height="640" width="640" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">And voila! Here's my finish! Sorry the picture was awful, I haven't been able to get a picture outside yet :(</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2878/12904325953_0f259e4850.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><img border="0" src="http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2878/12904325953_0f259e4850.jpg" height="480" width="640" /></span></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3781/12904332703_a72ceb5740.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><img border="0" src="http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3781/12904332703_a72ceb5740.jpg" height="480" width="640" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I created templates using the cardboard piece at the back of the layer cake and a variety of embroidery hoops. I cut the pieces out, added seam allowances, and chose my fabrics.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3788/12904340973_a07e76f5b2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><img border="0" src="http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3788/12904340973_a07e76f5b2.jpg" height="640" width="640" /></span></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3712/12904234735_fc423d7d89.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><img border="0" src="http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3712/12904234735_fc423d7d89.jpg" height="640" width="480" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span id="ms-rterangecursor-start" rtenodeid="1"></span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Orange is a color that I almost never work with, so this was certainly a little out of my comfort zone! And the night that I did most of the bulk of the piecing for the circles left me with a headache. Honestly, I'm not quite sure that I could do it again, but I just tried to sew the pieces together in the most logical order, and it miraculously resulted in no Y-seams.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3727/12904637614_eeb9338565.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><img border="0" src="http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3727/12904637614_eeb9338565.jpg" height="480" width="640" /></span></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2872/12904195215_b48aebb081.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><img border="0" src="http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2872/12904195215_b48aebb081.jpg" height="640" width="480" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">One of the things that was nice about the Botanics fabric is that it doesn't have a lot of stretch to it. While this makes me sad that I won't be making any shirts out of it anytime soon, it was nice for curved piecing. But despite my best efforts, the final product was a little wavy. And I had used up all my ability to figure out the math to piece any more curves, so I used my machine to thread trace the 1/4" seam and then pressed the raw edge under and appliqued it to a 15" square of Kona silver [which, by the way, I'm in love with that color now].</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3773/12904295503_ce3c8c0a7b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><img border="0" src="http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3773/12904295503_ce3c8c0a7b.jpg" height="480" width="640" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">And that square sat for over a week. While I looked at it and wondered where to go next. I totally would have made a pillow, but Jess had shown some sneak peeks of her awesome quilt, and I was feeling the pressure to create a bigger project, lest I look like I was taking the easy way out. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I think this is where I started to veer off from the picture. I would wake up each day with a different idea. First I was going to do chevrons on all four sides, and then I was going to create additional gold half circles extending out, and then, and then, and then... And my project still sat. Finally I got it in my head that the final product needed to look like a circuit, or machinery type vibe. So I added some gold strips, some equilateral triangles, and lots more Kona silver.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3822/12904263845_c6626cf3f6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><img border="0" src="http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3822/12904263845_c6626cf3f6.jpg" height="640" width="640" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> When I was taking pictures of it Stephen asked me what it was. I explained the challenge and said this was my project. His response was to clarify whether or not it had a purpose and I said that it didn't necessarily need a purpose but that sometimes it was just about creating art.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">He ended the conversation by saying "Well then this is like all that famous modern art, because I've never understood it, and that's how I feel when I look at your project." ;)</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Make sure you </span><a href="http://quiltyhabit.blogspot.com/2014/03/botanics-challenge-top-finished.html" target="_blank"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">go check out Jess's project</span></a><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> - a wildly different use of Botanics and a fabulous end result! I can't wait to see the quilted version because she really rocks the FMQ and I'm sure it will add another layer of spectacular depth to her quilt!</span>Sew Festivehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10191197877691355031noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7401629941608199941.post-2397752153119636572014-02-17T20:14:00.002-06:002014-02-18T08:00:50.428-06:00Instagram Happenings<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Follow me on Instagram @sewfestive for sewing tidbits, kittycats, and pictures of my dinner [ha!] :)</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Bought 3.5 yards of 108" wide backing fabric from Botanics. It's got more of a drape than the regular width Botanics, which is weird. Can't wait to get quilting on my king-size Irish Chain!</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">A 20" block from the Simplify Fireworks pattern for a baby quilt for my boss. <span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">And to round it all out, I made a pillow cover using some linen blend dish towels I found on clearance at Target! I used one on the front and brought it up to size by adding a strip of Essex in Natural, and then I used another towel on the back. I need to make one more pillow in a great teal color to round out my couch collection of moss, mustard, cream, and then teal.</span><br />

<div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Jess from <a href="http://quiltyhabit.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Quilty Habit</a> and myself are embarking upon a sewing challenge with Botanics. I love me some Botanics. Yum.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">We have challenged each other <i>[and ourselves]</i> to create a project based off a picture. It can be an exact replica of a design in the photo or more of an abstract interpretation. Jess has a layer cake, so I figure I'll use my layer cake as well. Plus I can't bring myself to cut into my half-yard bundle yet. The struggle is real, guys.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">So! My photo!</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7142/6653490361_5cf24d572f.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7142/6653490361_5cf24d572f.jpg" width="518" /></span></a></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I favorited <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/littlebitsys/6653490361/in/faves-67824990@N07/" target="_blank">this photo by Sewing Geek</a> back in 2012. I have no idea how I'll do this yet, because I want to piece it, but I'm nothing if not stubborn. I actually almost chose a <a href="http://quiltyhabit.blogspot.com/2014/01/botanics-competition-go_13.html" target="_blank">picture wildly similar to Jess</a>, except mine was a watercolor. So I'm glad I opted for this one. Variety is the spice of life you know.</span></div>

I'm exhausted! As I head into my first full week of work in over 2 weeks [ew], I thought I'd share my sewing-filled Christmas goodies.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I've asked for sewing notions and fabric every year for Christmas since I started sewing. I guess this year they finally decided that I'm serious about my hobby, and I actually got some stuff :)</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3707/11789688446_8562155ea7.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><img border="0" src="http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3707/11789688446_8562155ea7.jpg" height="480" width="640" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Hilariously, I got not one, but two irons. When I was a teenager I never guessed I'd ask for an iron for Christmas, much less receive two of them. I ended up keeping the one with the precision tip, because zomg how cool. Oh and I got a $50 gift card to a fabric store, but forgot to add that to the picture :)</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I also asked for Clover clips and and Olfa Splash, because all you peoples on the Internets rave about them.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">And I asked for some smaller Omnigrid rulers, because as much as I adore my 12.5" square ruler, sometimes you gotta trim those pesky tiny HSTs.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3727/11789370905_53ed3ea55a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><img border="0" src="http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3727/11789370905_53ed3ea55a.jpg" height="640" width="640" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">My favorite present was this beautiful half-yard bundle of Botanics. Look how gorgeous all that color is. I was SO excited to open it, and even more excited to put it in color order. This generous gift came from my fabulous new fiance, who had actually told me I wasn't getting any Christmas presents due to the fact that he gave me a sparkly diamond a week before the holiday. But a few days before he proposed I sent him a text about the 30% off sale at <a href="http://pinkcastlefabrics.com/" target="_blank">Pink Castle Fabrics</a> and included a link to the Botanics bundle that I was trying not to break down and buy. So he bought it instead and just crossed his fingers that I'd have the will to resist. Sigh, it's a beautiful bundle, guys.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I haven't had a spare moment to sew in weeks, and I can't wait to get to all my new stuff! But first...</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7374/11789347374_e7af0d172d.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><img border="0" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7374/11789347374_e7af0d172d.jpg" height="480" width="640" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">...must clean up. Boo!</span>Sew Festivehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10191197877691355031noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7401629941608199941.post-77387821893292911842013-12-24T14:06:00.000-06:002013-12-24T14:10:03.225-06:00Holiday Sewing: My Very Favorite Story<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Merry Christmas Eve! Just wanted to pop in and share my favorite Christmas sewing story from my holiday season:</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5543/11536048145_b21c249016.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5543/11536048145_b21c249016.jpg" width="480" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">For those who haven't caught on, I'm crazy about my cats. I'm a crazy cat lady in her mid 20's. It's bad. I had never had a cat before a little over a year ago, and now I have two fluffballs who are just the cutest. Last year I had taken a leftover stocking to hang for our only cat at the time, Ares. But now we have two cats! Who love to snuggle! And who needed matching stockings.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7424/11536089854_b7ee424f4c.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7424/11536089854_b7ee424f4c.jpg" width="640" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">So, I had been going on and on ad nauseum about Lizzy House's upcoming line Catnap. I kept telling Stephen that it was perfect, but wasn't reaching stores until late December. I was just talking out loud one day when I said I should just email <a href="http://lizzyhouse.com/" target="_blank">Lizzy House</a> herself. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7386/11536188203_99a611d62e.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7386/11536188203_99a611d62e.jpg" width="480" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><i>AND THEN I ACTUALLY DID IT.</i></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I must have been feeling quite loony, because I felt a little ridiculous going to her website to her contact form and sending an email that basically read like this:</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">"Hi, I must have your fabric for my kitty stockings. Nothing else is acceptable. Please sell me some of your fabric before I can get it in stores. Please don't judge the things I'm willing to do for my cats to have Christmas stockings. Please don't notify the police that a crazy lady is begging for fabric. I promise to name my next kitty after you. Or my first born child. You're fantastic, k thanks bye."</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">[Some of those are direct sentences taken from the email. You can decide which.]</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5523/11536142476_39ced6253d.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5523/11536142476_39ced6253d.jpg" width="480" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">And wouldn't ya know, Lizzy House was tickled at my email and agreed to send me some Catnap. Seriously guys, she's nice. As far as I know, she didn't put an Internet restraining order on my craziness, but she might have told her friends that she's got a fangirl. And Catnap is so richly colored and the fabric feels great.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3828/11536202193_f56d46ddf6.jpg" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" width="640" /></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">This IG photo isn't the best quality - my apologies!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3828/11536202193_f56d46ddf6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">And I have no shame. Because my baby fluffs are going to have matching stockings to tear into tomorrow morning. I do plan on adding their names to the cuffs for next year, but I just ran out of time.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I hope you have a very merry Christmas and open up lots of fabric tomorrow :)</span>Sew Festivehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10191197877691355031noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7401629941608199941.post-14299980216210778142013-12-16T21:34:00.002-06:002013-12-16T21:34:14.585-06:00Giveaway winner and the holiday sewing never ends<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Hi to all you new followers out there, and hi to all you followers-for-a-while! I updated my SMS Giveaway post with the winner, so please <a href="http://sewfestivehandmade.blogspot.com/2013/12/sew-mama-sew-giveaway-day.html" target="_blank">check back in</a>. I do apologize for not replying to everyone's comments - there were a lot of you!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I totally meant to announce the winner over the weekend and then this happened:</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3672/11412842986_f90d732aed.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3672/11412842986_f90d732aed.jpg" width="640" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">So you know, I was a little preoccupied ;) That ornament accompanied the ring, as we swap ornaments with each other every year, so we can build up our stash of meaningful ornaments [<i>see, I stash more than f</i></span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><i>abric</i>]. I'd say this year became pretty meaningful!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">In other less sparkly news, I still have a backlog of some Christmas projects to share, but I think I'll just let the photos do most of the talking:</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2811/11412765655_58b066828e.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2811/11412765655_58b066828e.jpg" width="480" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Munki Munki Christmas pillow - a new FMQ trial - I'm not so much a fan of it. The FMQing, not the pillow. I love the pillow!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5523/11338837285_96553bd982.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5523/11338837285_96553bd982.jpg" width="480" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Some inspiring geometrics. That turned into this...</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3766/11338820185_80e2af1afb.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3766/11338820185_80e2af1afb.jpg" width="480" /></span></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3755/11338913143_bc39529a42.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3755/11338913143_bc39529a42.jpg" width="480" /></span></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7342/11338768995_79beb5e4e6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7342/11338768995_79beb5e4e6.jpg" width="480" /></span></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">An almost-but-not-quite finished advent calendar. I've been sewing on the buttons as I hang the daily ornament. Because you know, sometimes you just lose your steam at the prospect of 24 buttons and making binding. It will all get done in the end :)</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I have one Christmas project left to share, and it's probably my favorite story so far, so check back later in the week!</span><br />

Welcome to my little space of the Internets, where I parade my cats, my sewing mistakes, snippets of my life, and occasionally have something finished to share ;)</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I've participated in several of these since I've been blogging, and I thought this time around I'd do something a little different!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3682/11297900055_5c8b536f25.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3682/11297900055_5c8b536f25.jpg" width="640" /></span></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3793/11298001773_6765e36367.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3793/11298001773_6765e36367.jpg" width="640" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I'm giving away 150 HSTs in oranges and blues. The solid is Kona White. All the oranges and blues are designer, quilt-shop quality, with a couple Kona solids thrown in, and one Moda Crossweave. The images above are just some of the fabrics in the stack. The HSTs are 4.5" unfinished, and will require trimming. The seams are already pressed open. It's almost half and half between orange and blue, but there are maybe 10 more blue HSTs in the bunch. For those who would want to know, I piece with Gutterman polyester thread.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7371/11297921666_90d5668f43.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7371/11297921666_90d5668f43.jpg" width="640" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I'm also throwing in a length of Kona blue<span style="font-size: x-small;"><i> [not sure exactly what the shade is, but it's a medium blue]</i></span> that is just a few inches shy of a full yard. So basically sew those HSTs together, cut up that Kona for some binding or backing, and you almost already have yourself a quilt! :)</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>

I totally meant to be back here and post more last week. However, I just woke up from my too-much-turkey-and-stuffing-and-shopping coma. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">But I digress.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5535/11215736606_da3fb477f8.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5535/11215736606_da3fb477f8.jpg" width="480" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I finished up my sister's gingerbread pillow before she had to head back home last weekend. I did not finish my own pillow and I didn't make my other sister a pillow. Nor did I take pictures of this finished pillow. Because of that coma. <span style="font-size: x-small;"><i>[Don't worry, my older sister got lots of Santa gnomas to make up for her pillow loss.]</i></span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2823/11215730554_8e35cb5c8e.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2823/11215730554_8e35cb5c8e.jpg" width="640" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Then I decorated for Christmas! I have one sweet and sour fluffmuff kitty who was all up in our Christmas tree jam last year, and then we got another kitten earlier this year. So I wasn't playing any games with those guys. But I LOVE ornaments and decorating, and I wasn't willing to give that up. Enter: our living room ledge. This is the weirdest space and previously held no regular decorations. It's just so...big...</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3759/11215855413_e01cc6c0db.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3759/11215855413_e01cc6c0db.jpg" width="640" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Now it holds awesome paper stars from IKEA, a double garland wrapped in lights by yours truly, a giant empty box wrapped as a present, and a light-up glass present. Plus, ornaments! I have a 2.5 ft real tree that has no ornaments on it as well. Take that cats!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">As far as sewing goes, in addition to the decorations that I was making last weekend, I whipped up some quick sachets to send in all the care packages to friends I was mailing out. Because who doesn't need their underoos and socks to smell like a field of lavender?!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5506/11215779696_40013cf32f.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="546" src="http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5506/11215779696_40013cf32f.jpg" width="640" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">All you need is some orphan charm squares, the filling of your choice, and a funnel. And really, the funnel is just optional for your convenience! </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">My charm squares are from Seaside by October Afternoon. I looove the line, but I've had the charm pack for quite some time and hadn't used it, so I figured I might as well hop to it. Plus it's a great collection that is cohesive, yet has prints that are masculine-friendly and prints that are very feminine. The back of the sachets are navy Essex linen, which I thought might breathe better to release the scents. My fillings are lavender and cedar shavings. Feminine and masculine ;) I bought both from an Etsy shop, which had excellent service. However, I was so offended by the terrible service I received at the first shop that I approached to purchase the items. Let me just say, the fact that it's online and your customer isn't directly in front of you does not mean you can treat them badly!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7456/11215783235_da89842376.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7456/11215783235_da89842376.jpg" width="640" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Anyways, you sew the charm squares up with a normal 1/4" seam, leaving an opening about an inch, or large enough to put your funnel into. I realized throughout this process that if you're filling your sachets with cedar shavings you might want a larger hole. Clip the corners, turn right-side out and press.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5492/11215796194_0256724295.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5492/11215796194_0256724295.jpg" width="640" /></span></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5485/11215916923_57a3056479.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5485/11215916923_57a3056479.jpg" width="480" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Fill them as much as desired. Hand-stitch the opening closed. My hand-stitching isn't invisible, but hopefully the recipients don't notice.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2891/11215807125_5676397d1c.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2891/11215807125_5676397d1c.jpg" width="640" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Gift wrap as desired! <span style="font-size: x-small;"><i>[My mom makes those cute little tags, aren't they adorable?!]</i></span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: x-small;"><i><br /></i></span></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Sachets go so quickly assembly line style and are a fantastic item to just have on hand for a last-minute thoughtful gift.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Happy sewing :)</span>Sew Festivehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10191197877691355031noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7401629941608199941.post-42163915514928966302013-11-27T08:11:00.004-06:002013-11-27T08:11:51.644-06:00Holiday Sewing: Pillows for All, and to All a Good Night!<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Happy Wednesday! For most of us, this is the last work day of the week <i>[can I get a WOO!]</i>. Also for most of us, it's WIP Wednesday ;)</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I'm currently working on a pillow for myself and my two sisters.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2833/11059898314_cf0c0d133f.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2833/11059898314_cf0c0d133f.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><b>For me:</b> a present block in green, because I needed a pop of green on my couch. I'm very traditional when it comes to Christmas decorations, so you won't find any aqua or pink at my house as a main color. Not that I don't think it can look nice, but I like more traditional color schemes and motifs because it reminds me of my family.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I didn't use a pattern, I just made it up based on what size I wanted my pillow cover to be [18"]. Fabrics are a Cotton Couture solid that was on sale at <a href="http://www.fatquartershop.com/" target="_blank">Fat Quarter Shop</a> for like $4/yd [!!!], Riley Blake La Creme red dots, and a Children at Play gingham. I started quilting last night, remembering my promise to myself to try new quilting designs.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2888/11059893114_eb72331d4c.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2888/11059893114_eb72331d4c.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<b style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">For my younger sister Robyn:</b><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> a gingerbread man! This was on her request. I used one man from the block from last year's Fat Quarter Shop </span><a href="http://www.fatquartershop.com/deck-ade-the-halls-complete-pattern-set-quilt-pattern" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;" target="_blank">Deck-ade the Halls quilt</a><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">. This top is 16" once I added some borders. Fabrics are another Cotton Couture solid, two light green prints from the Basic Grey charm pack from yesterday's projects, and a light aqua snowflake print from Basic Grey's Jovial line. I've quilted the background of this guy with swirls.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><b>My older sister Rachel</b> is getting a snowflake-inspired pillow that hasn't been started yet. I really really hope I'll be able to pass these pillows out tomorrow, so I guess I better get to it!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><b>Have a safe, delicious, and happy Thanksgiving!</b></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><b><br /></b></span>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">This week I've got lots of holiday sewing to share. I just made a quilt that I can't share, which always bums me out, but I've been spending some time making some small holiday projects. that I CAN show off!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I have some really amazing friends who live scattered around the country. We really enjoy sending each other care packages throughout the year. I've recently fallen down on the job of just sending little cards and gifts. One of my friends, Kadi, just sent me this fantastic Halloween package that had candy, a Starbucks gift card, festive socks, Target coups, and some other little things. It was just so thoughtful and full of things that are absolutely <strong><em>me</em></strong>.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">So my first order of business was a return package for her!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;"></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2839/11059765635_ef300522be.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2839/11059765635_ef300522be.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I had a Basic Grey charm pack <span style="font-size: x-small;">[<em>I cannot for the life of me remember the fabric line]</em></span> from last year laying around. I cut it up into 2.5" squares and sewed 25 together into a hot pad. I normally make them with Insul-Brite, but I didn't have any, so I quilted the top onto a layer of batting, and then quilted the entire thing to another layer of batting and the backing fabric.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;"></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3791/11059877784_6bc5b1c06a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3791/11059877784_6bc5b1c06a.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I rounded the corners and added some red pinstriped binding. The loop is a piece of the selvage!</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3706/11059870784_c7db12ca24.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3706/11059870784_c7db12ca24.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Throw in a kitchen towel with some matching squares sewed onto it....</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3752/11059829786_2026b6951c.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3752/11059829786_2026b6951c.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">...and load a basket full of goodies.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I'm going to be sending this out on Friday so that it will arrive at the start of the Christmas season! I hope it will bring a smile to my sweet friend's face :)</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Stay tuned for some upcoming posts of holiday pillows, advent calendars, and handmade Christmas presents!</span><br />

I took several naps, I watched The Conjuring [zomg scariest movie ever, and I <b>hate </b>scary movies], ate Chinese food with a friend, went to see Ender's Game [great!], and...took down my Halloween decorations.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Which meant I had a naked pillow! Eep!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3748/10681780723_cd6f2aea4f.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3748/10681780723_cd6f2aea4f.jpg" width="480" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Fabric: literally the perfect weird orange shade from Kitschy Kitchen and the perfect rusty shot cotton, plus Lush Uptown of course</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">What's a girl to do but make a new pillow cover for the month of November?</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3744/10681641904_a5ebcc7c38.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3744/10681641904_a5ebcc7c38.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">This pillow cover conveniently coincides with the <a href="http://quiltyhabit.blogspot.com/2013/11/sewing-with-certainty-goal-link-up.html" target="_blank">Sewing with Certainty</a> series over at <a href="http://quiltyhabit.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Quilty Habit</a>! Ah, serendipity. As I was making this simple cover, I thought about how I really want to expand my FMQ skills. I'm brave every now and then and try a new design, but once I become comfortable with it I forget to continue on to a different design. So designs that I'm comfortable with [<i>stippling, swirls, pebbles, back and forth lines</i>] become the norm.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">And if we don't push ourselves, how will we ever improve? <span style="font-size: x-small;">[Ps, you can link up your goals over at Quilty Habit right <a href="http://quiltyhabit.blogspot.com/2013/11/sewing-with-certainty-goal-link-up.html" target="_blank">here</a>]</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5479/10681585546_8fea919edc.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5479/10681585546_8fea919edc.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">But baby steps, folks, which is why on this pillow, I went with a design that I feel comfortable with on the inner border, and instead just tackled how to transition through the corners. It's not perfect, but I'll take it. And I've made a promise to myself to continue the trend when I make my Christmas pillows in a few weeks. Because 24" pillow covers are the perfect practice size!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">And then once I finished sewing the pillow, I thought to myself, "November is just a few short weeks away from December, so I better get my holiday sewing started," which led to a small army of these guys:</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5503/10681635346_85144837be.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5503/10681635346_85144837be.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">These are from the Santa gnoma panel from last year's Winterkist line. I still have a little more than a yard of the black print, not including the 20 gnomas that I cut out on Saturday. Plus 1/2 yard of the pink gnomas. They're backed in a red pin dot and stuffed with polyfill, then hand-stitched closed at the bottom. Sometimes I add a pocket on the back for an alternative to Elf on a Shelf -- which I love the concept, but find the actual elf to be really creepy.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><b><br /></b></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><b>Gnomas for all!</b></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Happy Fabric Tuesday everyone :)</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The entire weekend I kept up on Instagram [I'm <i>sewfestive </i>on IG, although I use it for personal and sewing] and I kept telling anyone I was with when I saw a great fabric line. Except um, they didn't care.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">But I know you guys care, so here is my Quilt Market drool-worthy fabric list:</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://thelittleredhen.typepad.com/.a/6a00e54efbe3a18833019affefcd65970b-800wi" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="452" src="http://thelittleredhen.typepad.com/.a/6a00e54efbe3a18833019affefcd65970b-800wi" width="640" /></span></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Photo courtesy of <a href="http://www.thelittleredhen.typepad.com/" target="_blank">The Little Red Hen</a></span></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Botanics by Carolyn Friedlander</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Oh.my.GAWD. I have been literally craving this fabric for over a month, since I first stumbled on a pre-order on some shop's website. AND GUYS. This collection also has some of the sketchy prints in 108"wide...backing my quilts in some of the best fabric ever? Um, yes please. I will be buying all of this. All that I can get my hands on.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://thelongthread.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/Garden-Fabric-Collection-low-resolution.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="428" src="http://thelongthread.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/Garden-Fabric-Collection-low-resolution.jpg" width="640" /></span></a></td></tr>

</tbody></table>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Garden by Ellen Luckett Baker</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Now this is a collection that I'm just really interested in some of the prints. Top left, top right, bottom right, and the raindrop print and the print under it. But I'm loving the mustard, cerise, gray, turquoise. I can totally see myself making some new pillow covers out of these prints, which are a canvas blend from Kokka.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>

</tbody></table>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">April Showers by Bonnie and Camille</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I want all the great basics/blenders that this line has. Stripes, dots, ginghams...those are the fabrics that I use constantly.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Chromatics by AGF Studio</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">There are several prints in this line from past lines, but they're reproduced in multiple colorways. I, for one, want the above print in every single color. Yum.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I've been patiently waiting for that print to be released for several months. I'm not a patient person by nature. Also, note to self, must make a quilt in these colors!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Fabric that I want but can't find good enough pictures of:</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">-Wee Wander by Sarah Jane Studios</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">-Meadow by Leah Duncan [zomg the greens in this line look SO GOOD]</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">-Botanique by Joel Dewberry</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">And um, don't judge me, but I also want some prints from Lizzy House's Catnap, to make my kittyfluffs a pillow/bed.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">So now that you know my deepest fabric desires...<b><i>what about you?!</i></b></span><br />
